In Terraforming Mars, you control a corporation with a certain profile. As terraforming progresses, more and more people will immigrate from Earth to live on the Red Planet. Be aware of the fact that their are a lot of cards that can destroy plant production, so this strategy is not without risk.Corporations are competing to transform Mars into a habitable planet by spending vast resources and using innovative technology to raise temperature, create a breathable atmosphere, and make oceans of water. However if you can get early plant production in can net you a lot of points over the course of the game because you will be placing greeneries earlier than anyone else. There are very few early game plant production cards since most of them require a minimum heat or O2 level. The basic idea is to end the game as early as possible by maxing out the temperature and O2 tracks, so that you get most of your points from TR and win before the other players are able to get their economy going. If you can get a decent amount of heat production and plant production early in the game, then you are setup for a rush strategy. Heat is a resource that is most valuable if you are the only player investing in it. However, there are a lot of cards that raise the temperature without needing heat production so it definitely isn’t necessary. It also helps you prepare for the Thermalist award. Heat production is useful as a steady TR boost every few turns. This can be a successful strategy, just don’t fall into the trap of thinking you must have production in all areas. A common mistake new players make is to think that they need to get production going in all six areas. The first important decision you will make is which of the six economic areas you are going to specialize in. The five points are nice, but a stronger economy is usually better in the long run. Meaning you shouldn’t pass up a good economy card to try and achieve a Milestone. It is also important to consider which Milestones you want to work towards, but economy is more important. Your goal in the first few turns is first and foremost to build your economy. Corporation specific strategies will be covered in a future post.
